Spring has finally sprung and it’s time to get outdoors! Why not celebrate by having an outdoor picnic? An affordable alternative to eating the same meal indoors, Picnics can be SUPER FUN!!! Keeping in mind a few simple tips & tricks while planning, your picnic surely be success and enjoyed by all.
Most people know what essentials should go into their picnic basket, but in case this is your first time hosting a picnic, we’ve compiled a brief list:
- Napkins or paper towels
- Blanket
- Ice packs
- Disposable cups, plates & utensils
- Extra food containers & aluminum foil for leftovers; but there probably won’t be any!
So, what else should you bring along? When purchasing food, be sure to only bring just enough for the attendees and maybe just a little more in case anyone wants seconds. That way, no one has to carry home leftovers, or worry about packing everything up so it does not spoil.
What’s on the menu? Basically anything can be eaten at a picnic. Pick up some fried chicken & sides at a local market, or make some finger sandwiches for the kids. Why not grill some hot dogs & hamburgers at the park if a grill is available to the public. Of course, fresh salads are a light & healthy alternative and offer a good variety to everyone.
Don’t forget dessert! Be sure to offer a variety of tasty treats. Ice cream, gelato or flavored ice is better left at home.
Here are some extra items to bring along on your next picnic:
- Condiments. Look for jars small enough to fit inside your picnic basket and reuse them on another picnic.
- Salt and pepper. Everyone likes their food seasoned a certain way.
- Serving utensils. If you’re serving salads, it would be a good idea to bring tongs.
- Cutting knife. Be sure to wrap the blade in a kitchen towel so you don’t get cut.
- Corkscrew or bottle opener. A multi-tool is an alternate to these items.
- Sunscreen. If it’s a sunny day, you’ll surely lose track of time and don’t want to burn.
- Trash bags. Have a “leave no trace” mentality.
- Moist towelettes. If you don’t have quick access to running water, use these to wash up after eating.
Even MORE things to bring on your picnic – especially when including the kids.
- Fresh Lemonade. Have the kids help you make fresh lemonade at home and fill containers and pack the basket to feel like they are a part of the planning.
- Dippin’ Style. It can be hard enough to get the kids to sit still long enough at home to eat a decent meal. So, plan ahead and be prepared for a distracted child when at a park. Serve finger foods that are easy to dip like fruits, veggies or little sausages.

- Activities. Maybe there’s a great spot with a view for the parents, but no playground for the kids. Be sure to keep a playground ball, jumprope, whiffleball & bat, bubbles, chalk or collapsible scooter in the trunk for added excitement.
Fun things to include on your couples only picnic:
- Music. With all the devices available to stream music, be sure to bring along some tunes to help you relax and enjoy the great outdoors.
- Wine. You never really need an occasion to break open a great bottle of wine. There’s no better time to enjoy a few sips than outdoors and under the stars.
- Fresh flowers. Okay, so you are surrounded by nature, but truth be told, flowers just
make everything a little brighter. Just grab some fresh buds from your own garden and a jelly jar and this simple decoration will add a touch of elegance to an adults only night out.
